My SATs experience

Today's the day...the end of the SATs exams that Year 2 have to sit. WOOOOOOP!

For some its a celebration and for others it's a big worry... After all the hard work and preparation that has been put into helping the children meet aged related expectations, now the time has come to see if it has paid off. Anxiety levels were at an all time high so the staff of the trust decided to mark the SATs immediately after school. Fortunately, I have been given the opportunity to observe the marking team and contribute where I can.

This experience has been really useful for me on two levels-

The first being, I have never worked or had any responsibility for a SATs class. I really felt the pressure when teaching either maths or literacy, even more so with a statutory test at the end of my teaching. I have realised now that this pressure has been good for me and has improved my teaching for the better. My subject knowledge is definitely better for it!

The second being, this has been a really useful experience that I can draw upon for when I actually have the chance to teach a Year 2 class myself. I have seen examples of children meeting age related expectations and greater depth, and I've learned strategies to help children meet their potential. For example: exemplar teacher modelling, written methods (use in during their exam), booster club (different children depending on strengths), how to make accessible working walls and children teaching children strategies.
