Confession time-

If I was a member of your team on a pub quiz with Geography as a topic, this would definitely not be my strongest round. (Expect to lose) But... I am learning!

Today's session was focused around physical geography under the theme of water.

Therefore we covered 3 mains areas of subject content-

  • Rivers, mountains and coastlines

  • Earthquakes and volcanoes

  • Weather and climate zones

Follow this link to watch a video of my groups man made meandering river and oxbow lake...

Terminology I have learnt-

  1. Plunge pool

  2. Meander

  3. Tributary

  4. Catchment area

  5. Confluence

  6. Erosion

Great books to stimulate discussion-

  • Magic Beach by Alison Lester (KS1)

  • Finn at Clee Point by Richard Knight and Giovanni Manna (KS2)

Planning, teaching and assessment:

'An assessment and progression framework for geography- three strands...

  • Knowledge

  • Understanding

  • Geographical skills and enquiry'

Geography Association (2014)-

*Ensure the planning works towards NC objectives.

*Vary your teaching strategies to keep children interested, curious and engaged.

*Learning outside the classroom opportunities can be exploited, first hand experiences are always great if relevant.

*Assessment- collect evidence, take pictures and record explanations! Be creative! No stats- take advantage!

Liz Lewis (2010:259) -

'We should invite and nature the natural curiosity children have about our world'
