On Wednesday 19th October I attended a CPD event hosted by ATL. I learnt that we are currently in transition between statements to Educational, Health and Social Care plans (EHCP), this sticks with a child from birth to 25. This was changed to encourage outside agencies to work together and increase parental control of their child's SEND funding. It is estimated that it will take 3 ½ years to change from statements to EHCP’s. However, a child's learning is still the responsibility of the class teacher therefore when I am on placement I should ask to read the EHCP plan so that I can meet the needs of all the children. I must ensure that I research around any particular need a child has and that you are realistic with their learning and how I can impact them.

BUT... EVERY TEACHER IS A TEACHER OF SEN/D.

Top tips I have learnt for supporting children with SEND-

Communication

  • Never ask SEND children to copy from the board, by the time they have found where they are writing and what… they have wasted time and you have moved on.

  • Vocabulary- first, next and last.

  • Children have no idea how to self check, you must show the children what to look for.

Organisation

  • How have you structured your classroom? Do you have seating plans?

  • Consider your displays… they can give children a sensory overload.

  • Utilise your TA’s

Differentiation

  • Bigger work

  • Yellow paper

  • Printouts

Expectation

  • Behavioural expectations… pick one and focus on one everyday, praise individuals for displaying this everyday.

  • Motivate children, say want we want not what we don't want (this prevents bad behaviour)

  • Show them what's in it for them… what will they get out of this?

Socilisation

  • PSHE, not just a circle time but can be used to teach specific skills such as resilience

  • Nurturing classroom through, acceptance of all, disability awareness (can read stories about disabled children), conflict resolution and emotional literacy helps pupils

  • Social skills- looking at people's personal space

  • Emotional literacy- the vocal to explain how their feeling
