During my placement I met a lovely young boy that had struggled to learn the high frequency words therefore every morning for 4 weeks the boy and myself would leave the class room for 5 minutes and practice these words.

The boy had grown bored of simply reciting and decoding the words so I had to become more creative. I introduced a time element and made it a competition. We recorded everyday how many of the words he could say correctly in 1 minute. He enjoyed himself that much that he took a copy of the list home and stuck it on the fridge. I later spoke with his guardian was informed that they practice on the way to school in the car, this made me feel really proud as it was clear I was helping this child.

I believe this child grew more confident with the words and started to make progress. The words that have been shaded above show the words he could read correctly and confidently, others that are white are words he could read but had to segment and blend first. At the end of my placement I gave this child a certificate for being resilient when learning the high frequency words.

On reflection I would have liked to have given this boy a sticker or some reward everyday he beat his top score, this way I would be celebrating his success motivating him for the next day.
