Subject Knowledge... Sound

During Professional Practice phase 1A the scariest aspect for me was being confident with my subject knowledge... On many occasions I had to go home and research the topic I needed to plan for before I could even construct a lesson plan.

Within the last two weeks of the placement I volunteered to teach the start of the science topic sound, this was a subject I felt confident with my subject knowledge however nerves got the better of me and I did my research just in case. As a result I went home and made some colourful mind maps that I can also add to my science subject knowledge folder.

After spending hours planning my final observation as you do, it came to the middle of the lesson and I could see my visiting tutor and my school based mentor whispering in the corner. Naturally I had to go over and investigate and they were questioning whether I was teaching the children the wrong information... Disaster.

Question for you all... Which medium does sound travel the quickest through?

A) Solid

B) Gas

C) Liquid

Well the I can tell you the answer is Solid but my mentor and VT thought is was Gas. They googled and even asked the science coordinator. I had never been so panicked in my life.

My advice to anyone thinking about becoming a Teacher is...

Do your research and always be prepared! That way when you find yourself in my situation you can celebrate! Be a proactive learner!
